If you use Instagram for your business, this is the post for you. I’m going to be sharing my top tips on writing a STRONG instagram bio that attracts your ideal audience. These strategies work for both service and product-based businesses, and will definitely help you grow in 2021!
My Tips to Improve your Instagram Bio!
You can take a look at how I’ve set up my Instagram account here at @ReneeHalfway. For more tips like these, give me a follow and always stay updated!
1. Switch to a business account.
First things first: If you haven’t already, turn your personal account into a business account! You can do this by clicking “edit profile”, then “switch to business account”. Don’t worry, it’s completely free to do this.
The benefit of doing this, is that you’ll be able to see all of your insights. These will help you determine what type of content your audience likes to see. Another reason to switch to a business account, is simply because it looks more professional.

2. Define your ideal audience.
It’s important to understand that lots of followers does not equal success in your business. Actually, having lots of the WRONG followers could hurt your business.
That’s why it’s super important to clearly define your ideal audience. Ask yourself: “Who am I trying to reach?” A BEST way to really define your audience, is by creating a client persona. This is what most highly successful business owners do! When creating a client persona, you answer some very specific questions as if you were your ideal client.
I created this free worksheet to help you create your own client persona! Just leave me your email, and I’ll send it over to your right away.

3. Describe how you can help your ideal client.
Whether you’re service or product-based, ALWAYS let your clients know who you help, and how you can help them. A great way of doing this is by thinking about your ideal client’s pain points and show how you can fix them. How can your service or product improve their lives?
My Instagram bio tells anyone that finds my Instagram page that I help young, ambitious women. If that’s not them, they can just move along! Yes, that means you won’t gain a ton of followers right away, but the followers you do get are TRULY interested in your biz!
4. Use clear language.
Because you only have room for 150 characters in your instagram bio, it is important that you use them wisely. Don’t beat around the bush and get straight to the point!
Also make sure that you use language your clients will understand. Avoid using jargon that would only make sense to other people in your industry.

5. Make use of keywords.
It’s 2021 and that means that Instagram is starting to function more as a search engine. If you’re already familiar with SEO, you’ll know that choosing the right keywords is crucial if you want people to find you.
Pick a few keywords that really pertain to your niche to make sure Instagram sends the right traffic your way! Don’t forget to incorporate your keywords in a natural sentence. Don’t just dump a bunch of random words in your instagram bio.
I’ve included the words “business”, “mindset” and “finance” in my bio. Those are also the main categories here on my blog, which means they are the perfect representation of what I do!

6. Place a keyword next to your name.
Your bio is very valuable but limited real estate, which means you should really try to get the most out of it! Just below your profile picture, you have the option to include your name. Go with your first name and place a strong keyword next to it! This is just another way Instagram can categorise your account and send users to your profile accordingly.
Note: I’m not talking about your instagram handle here. (The name that comes after the @). My instagram name is Renee I Online Business.
7. Include a Call-To-Action.
A new user has landed on your profile. GREAT! Now what should they do?
Writing a Call-To-Action will make it much more likely the new user will turn into a client or costumer! Add a link or email address to your bio where it says “website” and add one of the following examples:
- Book a free discovery call now!
- Click to visit our shop!
- Send me an email for more information!

8. Create a few highlights.
And more specifically, create some good ones! Highlights are usually one of the first things a new user will see. Here are some ideas for highlights:
- Our mission. Explain what your brand stands for and what you’re trying to achieve!
- About us.
- Testimonials. Got some clients that were happy with your service or product? Ask them to write a short testimonial!
- FAQ.
- Our Products/Services. Show some examples of the products that you sell, or explain your services in more detail.
To really go the extra mile, have some custom highlight covers made in your brand colours. It will create a professional, cohesive look on your profile. I got mine done by @DaniquetiDesign and highly recommend her!
